Ask any business owner about being “lonely at the top” and you are sure to get a smirk or a knowing grin. It’s as universal among business leaders as “by low, sale high” is on Wall Street. But there is an alternative.

During our first program on Texas Business Radio, Matt Register and I interviewed Juan Deshon CEO of Cordua Restaurant Group (CRG). CRG owns Churrascos Steakhouse along with four other fine dining brands. They also employ some 700 Houstonians, so knowing how to manage through downturns is a serious CEO challenge.

During the interview, Juan brought up a Best Practice that rings deep and true to my heart: utilizing a CEO peer group. As a Master Chair for Vistage International, I facilitate four peer groups; a CEO group, a key-employee group, and two trusted service provider groups.

So what’s so valuable about peer groups for leaders? Sometimes business leaders have to make serious decisions and those decisions often involve their own management team. Who can they talk to about those decisions?

Where can they go to get unbiased but experienced input on crucial decisions? A peer advisory group is a group of peers with similar experience who have addressed similar issues. AND a leader’s peer group has no bias, beyond seeint their fellow member succeed.

It’s hard to get that level of input elsewhere. But a peer advisory group is much more. At Vistage we have some 3,000 subject matter experts to lead a three-hour workshop on their respective specialty. We’re talking world-class speakers on all aspects of business and personal life. It is powerful!

Listen to this short excerpt where Juan tells how his peer group helped him make some major decisions.
