For over three decades, Meril Markley has crossed borders and demystified international business for her clients and for the readers of her many publications about taking the middle market to the global market.
Her career began with advising large multinational corporations while a tax lawyer at two of the “Big Four” global accounting firms and residing in Los Angeles, Paris, New York, or Houston (her home for the last 25 years).
Meril’s passion for helping middle market companies anticipate and surmount obstacles on the road to international expansion was ignited when she joined UHY Advisors TX, LLC in 2007. While Chair of the global tax group for UHY, she created the Trusted Advisor Program so that each international member firm committed to offering the full array of resources needed by first-time investors in their countries. She was featured on UHY’s Business in the Eye of the Storm television series, including her groundbreaking research on modern corporate governance as instituted in 14th century France by pioneering shareholders who assured their company’s survival for the next 600 years.
When RSM US LLP (formerly McGladrey) entered the Houston market, Meril joined the firm and established an international tax practice committed to energy-related businesses.
Meril owns the Markley Group, Inc. with her husband, Michael. It is their vehicle for providing advisory services and for the enterprise they founded as newlyweds in Paris, France – M. Markley Antiques, specializing in French Gothic Revival furniture.
Before becoming a tax lawyer, Meril trained as an opera singer and was based in Vienna, Austria. Her love of classical music has spurred her to unite business and the arts in many endeavors, including singing the National Anthem for an Astros baseball game and serving on the Board of the Houston Grand Opera. In 2016 she started the Art of Business quarterly luncheon series with the support of RSM, the French American Chamber of Commerce of Houston, and the International Friends of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. Each luncheon showcases an individual whose business includes an intriguing arts-related component or a creative person who has embraced the world of business for achieving artistic goals.
Meril holds a bachelor’s degree in Music from Vassar College, certificates in Voice from the University of Music in Vienna Austria, a law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law, and an LL.M. in transnational business and tax from McGeorge School of Law (Sacramento, California and Salzburg, Austria).
